Bajans love the Easter season for many different reasons! School children love it because it marks the beginning of a 2 week vacation. Workers love it because many get a 4 day weekend that includes Good Friday and Easter Monday. Christians love it because It is their most holy holiday with Good Friday and Easter Sunday Sunrise services. Everyone loves it because of the many events that include parades, gospel concerts, road tennis tournaments that take place during the Oistins Fish Festival. Other activities during the festival include fish boning, cooking, mixology and greasy pole-climbing competitions.
Easter traditions continue today including eating fish on Good Friday. The fish market is unusually busy with people looking for flying fish, barracuda, turpits and dolphin. The main coast road through Oistins is blocked off on Saturday to allow easy access to the stalls lined up on both sides of the street selling food, toys and assorted souvenirs.
On Sunday many families go to the Garrison Savannah and open pastures throughout the island to fly kites. It was fun to see so many fathers with their sons and daughters running trying to get the kites in the air with mothers looking on laughing and preparing lunch. If you didn’t have a kite, no worries, vendors were selling kites with string a the Garrison.
Monday is a day for picnics at the beach for many!
I love the Easter season and it has become my favorite time of year because it has a crop-over feel with a spiritual element. Yes there is some partying but it is very tame compared to Crop-over.
